Philippians 1:10 Social Media Code of Conduct for Clergy: How to maintain ecclesiastical decorum while utilizing social media platforms
The popularity of social media and digital communication is growing exponentially. The church should not shy away from these new forms of media but be actively present in them. However, as with all forms of communication and personal interaction, these media have healthy normative uses and unhealthy and potentially abusive uses. These guidelines are designed to identify normative behaviors that protect our clergy, parishioners, and especially youth. Social media tools, when used appropriately, can build and deepen relationships. These recommendations set healthy boundaries for communication and relationships digital, online, and on social media. It is important to remember that clergy are often viewed as authorized representatives of their church and diocese.
In this digital age where online communities are forming, we need to be part of the discussion and urge churches to find ways to use social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Social media offers the church many opportunities but also risks.
